Many issues can keep those with missing teeth from going to the dentist office to get replacement teeth. It could be dental phobia, lack of dental insurance, fear of receiving bad news or another reason. But you don’t have to worry when you come to Warwick Dental. At our Oklahoma City dental clinic, the entire staff is warm and welcoming, and we work hard to help our patients achieve their goals for dental health and wellness.
This Guide Will Show You:
When you have one or more missing teeth, you might feel ashamed of your smile. You may try to hide it when you laugh by covering your mouth with your hand or your dinner napkin. You may even try not to smile, or to smile without showing any teeth.
That’s no way to live, and our dentist wants to help you regain your self-confidence with dental implants.
When you have a missing tooth and you don’t get a replacement tooth quickly, the jawbone beneath the gap in your teeth begins to deteriorate. Thus, the faster you take care of the problem, the better the outcome. If you have had a missing tooth for many years and have lost bone mass, our dentist can do a bone graft ahead of time to prepare your jaw for a tooth implant.
Tooth implants are made up of a post, abutment and crown. The post is made of titanium and it is implanted directly into your jawbone. The post acts like a tooth root, and the jawbone resumes growing around the post until it forms a tight bond.
At this time, the dentist is able to attach the abutment and the crown for your replacement tooth.
Some patients are interested in learning more about a dental bridge to replace a missing tooth. A dental bridge is not cheaper than a dental implant, but some insurances pay more toward a dental bridge than they do for an implant.
A bridge to replace a single missing tooth is comprised of a row of three prosthetic teeth. In order to attach the appliance, the dentist must shave down the two teeth on either side of your missing tooth. Then he cements the bridge in place.
A dental bridge resolves the cosmetic aspect of having a missing tooth, but it does not aid in keeping the jaw strong, because it merely sits on the gumline. Additionally, a bridge lasts only about five to seven years, while a dental implant can last a lifetime.
In general, however, single dental implants cost $1,500 to $2,000 per implant. Not per procedure—but per implant. Some patients are only going to need a single implant, whereas others will need several because they’re missing multiple teeth. Note that this is only the cost of the dental implant itself.
This is essentially the answer to your question, “do dental implants hurt?” Local anesthesia will numb the nerves surrounding the dental implant area. With numbed nerves, you can expect not to feel any pain during your dental implant procedure. You may feel pressure at times, but it should not cause you discomfort.
People who take certain medications, such as steroids or drugs that suppress the immune system may not be suitable candidates. Also, people with certain habits, such as severe grinding or clenching their teeth may put too much pressure on the implants, causing long term damage.
If you are missing many or all your teeth, All-on-4 dental implants are a better solution than dentures. Dentures do not support jaw health because they too sit on the gumline. For this reason, your jawbone and gums continue to atrophy, and that is why dentures need to be relined every year or so to improve fit.
All-on-4 dental implants consist of four posts on your top arch and four on your bottom. Permanent denture plates are affixed to the posts, resulting in strong, sturdy, beautiful teeth.
