Regular Dental Checkup

Regular dental checkups are fundamental in preserving a healthy and attractive smile. They are crucial in ensuring optimal oral health, and we advise all our patients to prioritize them. Dental checkups should be conducted every six months to maintain ideal oral health.

Regular Dental Checkups

As leading dental hygienists in Oklahoma City, we strongly believe in the power of regular teeth cleanings, flossing, and sealants to prevent dental disease. We prioritize thorough dental care exams to check your teeth, gums, and overall health. At Warwick Dental, we care equally about your smile and well-being. When you come in for a typical new patient hygiene and cleaning appointment, here’s what you can expect:

  • First, your dental hygienist will take you to the exam room and take any necessary dental X-rays or photos.
  • Next, your dental hygienist will clean your teeth, polish, floss, and treat fluoride. They will also record your overall oral conditions relating to oral and periodontal (gum) health.
  • Afterward, the dentist will meet with you to discuss any concerns you may have or any areas we may want to address.
  • Finally, we will schedule any needed treatment or your next 6-month cleaning appointment.

We understand that your time is valuable and that quality care takes time. So, expect this first appointment to take 1 hour and 1.5 hours to ensure we take your time and provide enough information.

  • Why is regular teeth cleaning important?

Numerous oral health problems can only be identified through a comprehensive evaluation by a qualified dentist. Dental checkups facilitate oral cancer screenings, digital X-rays to detect concealed issues, and professional cleanings to eliminate plaque, bacteria, and other buildup that regular brushing and flossing may not efficiently remove.

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss, so early intervention is essential. Once gum disease has taken its toll on the tooth and supporting bone, it cannot be restored, but only managed or replaced. The dental hygienist will use a small ruler to gently measure the gum “pocket” around each of your teeth, making note of areas that you can’t clean with a toothbrush or floss. X-rays are used in conjunction with these measurements, to identify areas of bone recession.

  • How often should you get dental checkups?

Scheduled dental checkups every six months are recommended. When you first visit Warwick Dental, you will be asked to provide a complete health history to help our dental team understand your past and current health. Regular dental checkups will enable our team to monitor any changes in your oral health, ensuring that your mouth and teeth remain in excellent condition or are appropriately maintained.

The American Dental Association and most dentists suggest six-month checkups since the maintenance and cleaning provided at each visit is the best way to guarantee that your teeth and gums stay healthy. If your mouth is free of gum disease and heavy buildup, it usually takes about six months for tartar and stains to accumulate to the point of needing another cleaning. However, if you have a history of periodontitis, those maintenance visits may need to be as frequent as every 3-4 months.

  • Why are brushing and flossing important?

Brushing and flossing are more than just a way to freshen your breath. These oral hygiene practices physically disturb and remove the complex network of bacteria known as a biofilm, which reduces the likelihood of diseases like cavities and gum disease. Many products claim to be the best, so it’s essential to consult with your hygienist to determine the most suitable option. It’s necessary to brush your teeth at least twice a day for at least two minutes and floss once daily to maintain healthy teeth throughout your life. Encouraging your child to adopt these habits will help them maintain good oral health from childhood into adulthood.

  • What are other preventative dental care strategies?

Our dental cleaning services offer more than just simple teeth cleaning and polishing. In addition to removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria, our friendly dental hygienists also provide other preventative services, such as oral cancer screenings and gum disease treatment. These services aim to detect and treat disease early, increasing the chances of successful treatment. Based on your exam results, we may also recommend fluoride treatments or dental sealants to prevent future problems.
